If you received a residence permit in Spain, you would need a permit for further residence in the territory and to apply to any authorities. In Spanish, it is called Padrón/ Empadronamiento. For foreigners, registration in Spain is the official confirmation of the period of stay on the territory of this country. If you plan to obtain citizenship in the future, it is important because the period of your residence registration is equal to the time of stay on the territory.

The following documents are required for registration in Spain:

  • A valid passport
  • D.N.I. or Spanish Resident Card (Tarjeta de Residencia)
  • Extract from the family register of Libro de Familia for minor children or passports if the children are not residents of Spain
  • Deed of sale if you own the property. In Spanish Escritura de compraventa. You also need copies of this document. If you have an extract from the registry (Nota Simple), then only that will suffice
  • A rental agreement, if you are renting
  • A copy of the landlord's D.N.I. if you rent
  • The Nota Simple of the rental property and current electricity and water bills. Sometimes you may need other expense documents for the rental property. Usually, a bank statement from the last couple of months confirming payment of utility bills is sufficient.

All documents must be in Spanish.
After submitting all the documents, a document is issued that is considered valid for three months from the date of receipt. This document can be updated on request.
